How to survive in

Studio

Hanging system

Every room has a 'papergrid'. Papers and posters can be clipped underneath it. On top of the rail is a small groove for cards.

The regular studios also have a rail with two cords with a hook for hanging frames, and one metal wire on which cards can be hung with the ten magnets provided.

Intercom

When someone rings the bell, you will hear a ringtone in your room. Pick up the handset to talk to the person outside. You can open the front door by pressing the door icon, so there is no need to walk to the front door yourself.

From 11 pm the bell will still ring and you can still talk to the person outside, but the front door can no longer be opened electrically. You will have to go downstairs to open it. This is to prevent strangers from entering the building.

You can adjust the volume of the bell with the volume wheel on the side of the intercom. When the sound is off, a red light is on.

Thermostat

Underfloor heating keeps the room at a comfortable temperature. You can set the temperature with the thermostat next to the bathroom door. Underfloor heating is relatively slow, so big temperature changes can take a few hours.

During hot summer months the underfloor heating can be used for cooling. Heat pumps then send colder water through the floor, which cools the room. If you don't want this, set your thermostat higher than the room temperature.

If there are any problems with the heating, please let us know. The house rules do not allow separate electric heaters.

Fridge

In the studios, the fridge can be plugged into the sockets above the worktop. In the duplexes there are sockets inside the cupboard. These sockets can also be used for electrical appliances on the worktop. After plugging it in, it takes 2 hours before the fridge is cold enough to store food safely. Only unplug the fridge when it is empty and nothing needs to be kept cool.

You can set the temperature in the fridge with the dial on the inside right:

  • OFF is the 'off' position
  • 1 is the warmest setting
  • 6 is the coldest setting
  • recommended: setting 3 or 4

Please defrost the freezer at least once a year so that any ice build-up is removed in time.

Wi-Fi

A fast wireless internet signal is available in all studios. The password for the Wi-Fi network is '*******'.

The guest network has no password, so you never have to share a password with visitors. The guest network is still more than fast enough, even for watching videos.

Heating

The windows in the rooms have a sensor. If you open the window, the heating switches off. The duplexes don't have this, but it is still important to use heating wisely there too.

Rain

When it rains, it is important to close the windows in the rooms and the Velux windows in the duplexes.

Mobile reception

Mobile reception in the buildings can be poor on the ground floor and first floor. This is a known issue and common in new buildings. Wi-Fi calling (VoWiFi) can solve this and is already offered by the providers Orange and Telenet.

More information (in Dutch) on these pages:

Proximus does not offer this option yet.

Shower and washbasin

The shower drain sometimes needs some maintenance, especially if you have long hair. If the shower water no longer drains well, follow these steps.

First remove the grey cover plate.

Pull the red cup out of the drain and clean it. Make sure water can flow through it freely again.

When you put the red cup back, two things are important for the odour trap to work properly:

  • press the cup in firmly so the rubber edge is no longer visible
  • pour a little water into the cup

Then put the grey cover plate back.

The washbasin plug has a special push mechanism: press it to close or open the drain. Sometimes it can be a bit stiff and you need to pull the plug briefly to get it back into its starting position.

Kitchen

Waste

The kitchen has four bins, one glass bin and one food waste bucket:

  • Residual waste: only non-recyclable waste
  • PMD: plastic bottles, metal packaging and drink cartons (squash them flat and empty them before throwing them in the bin)
  • Plastic: clean packaging film, shopping bags, shrink film, plastic packaging
  • Paper: paper bags and cardboard boxes, magazines, newspapers, leaflets, books, writing and printing paper
    • NO dirty or greasy paper and cardboard
  • Glass: clear and coloured glass bottles and jars, but empty!
  • Organic waste (GFT): in the closed bucket, for all plant and animal food waste such as vegetables, fruit, meat, crisps, nuts or eggs.
Not allowed: liquids, coffee pads and mussel shells!

Microwave

The top dial sets the power level:

  • /////: 700W, for boiling water
  • ////: 600W, reheating all kinds of food
  • ///: 460W
  • //: 350W, melting butter and chocolate
  • ❄️: defrost, set the weight with the bottom dial
  • /: 120W

The bottom dial sets the time.

Close the door and the microwave will start.

Oven

Touch the on/off key for 2 seconds to switch the oven on.

Choose the cooking mode with the arrow keys. For an explanation of the different modes, see the user manual in the kitchen.

Setting the temperature

To change the default temperature for the selected mode, touch the °C key. Use the arrow keys to set the desired temperature. Touch the °C key again to confirm.

OPTIONAL: setting the cooking time

Touch the clock key until the cooking time symbol for the cooking time appears on the display. Use the arrow keys to set the desired time and confirm by touching the clock key again.

OPTIONAL: setting a later end time

Touch the clock key until the end of cooking time symbol for the end of the cooking time appears on the display. Use the arrow keys to set the desired time and confirm by touching the clock key.

Touch the start/pause key to start the oven.

OPTIONAL: preheating

After setting everything, touch the fast preheat key to preheat the oven. Touch the fast preheat key again to stop preheating.

Induction hob

Touch the on/off key to switch the hob on.

Touch the selection key for the cooking zone you want to use. A "0" appears on the display of that cooking zone.

Touch the + and - symbols to set a level between "1" and "9".

Setting the timer: touch the clock symbol and choose the number of minutes with the + and - keys.

A cooking zone switches off

  • when you set the level to "0"
  • or when you touch the symbol of that cooking zone for 2 seconds
  • or when the timer runs out

An "H" means the hob is still hot. A little later it changes to "h", which means it is less hot.

Sometimes the child lock is switched on by accident. You will notice this when a '-' appears when you try to turn on a zone. Switch the child lock off by holding two fingers to the left and right of the key symbol.

Cleaning equipment

There is a Vileda SuperMocio mop in the cupboard under the sink. You may use it to clean both the kitchen and your room. Please always put it away after use as shown in the photo below.

Vileda SuperMocio mop How to store the cleaning equipment

Cooker hood

Use the cooker hood when cooking. This prevents smoke and smells.

Worktop

Don't put hot pans on the table or the worktop: this damages the kitchens. Every kitchen has a cork trivet.

Fire blanket

Pull the blanket out of its holder and wrap the top edge once around your hands. Hold the blanket up high and position yourself behind it. Cover the fire in one smooth movement so that no oxygen can reach it.

If a person is on fire: lay the person down and wrap them in the fire blanket from the chin to the feet. Rub over the blanket from top to bottom and cool the person with water as soon as the flames are out.

Leisure

Common room

If you want to use the common room, there are two options:

Studying / watching TV / … with other 3POLIS students

  • Request the common room by e-mail (Skdiepenbeek@gmail.com) at least 2 days in advance and mention the activity you want to organise. If it is approved, we open the doors remotely.
  • Only 3POLIS students are welcome.
  • No eating or drinking (only water is allowed).
  • Don't move the tables and sofas.
  • Take care of the room and leave it clean (no chairs against the walls, don't stand on the tables or sofas).
  • Let us know when you leave the room so we can lock the doors again. Everyone leaves the room and switches off the lights by 11 pm at the latest.

Booking for an activity with food and drinks or with outside guests

  • Request the common room by e-mail (Skdiepenbeek@gmail.com) at least 7 days in advance and mention the activity you want to organise. If it is approved, you get the key the evening before.
  • Eating and drinking are allowed. Drink alcohol in moderation.
  • Take care of the room (no chairs, tables or sofas against the walls, don't stand on the tables or sofas).
  • You are responsible for the room. The key is collected the next day, and the room must be perfectly clean and tidy.
    • Empty all bins.
    • Wash the tables and the worktop.
    • The floor must be clean.
    • The toilets must be clean.
    • Tables, chairs and sofas must be back in their place.
  • All damage and cleaning costs will be charged (both materials and labour).
  • Our car park is for our own students. Ask visitors to come by bike or to park at the university.

The house rules remain in force (no deep fryers, candles, heaters…). If these rules are not followed or activities are dangerous, the activity will be stopped.

Table tennis

There is a table tennis table outside, free to use. Bring your own bats and balls.

3POLIS is a new-build project, so some defects may not have been noticed yet. Please let us know by e-mail, text message or the form below. Suggestions about what could be better or what is missing are very welcome too!
